Hi all, I have just started on the huge job of makingover my garden....It's going to take a couple of years, I feel. I was just wondering if anyone had any great ideas of hardy neverfail plants to fill in the gaps. (shade, dappled light and sun) I am west of toowoomba and have lots of mulch, compost and water to throw around. Any ideas would be great. Thanks

Hey, me too! 2hrs west of toowoomba. I havent started on my own block yet but have had good vegie gardens where we've rented..we do get the odd bad frost here though, especially the black frost when its dry.

We'd strongly recommend attacking a makeover from a different angle. All plants are never-fail theoretically – IF they're put in the right place. Plants have been happily living a full life cycle in the wild without any human help for millennia – because they're happy growing where they're growing.
Start with some design planning. Decide what and where the spaces will be. Help unify each or all of the spaces by deciding what style they'll be. Decide what elements you'll need: seasonal shade probably means a deciduous tree privacy screening suggests a row of evergreen shrubs. Then find a deciduous tree, evergreen shrub etc to do the job that will be ‘never fail' under the conditions where they're going to be planted: shady, badly drained, frosty – whatever prevails just there.
Otherwise it becomes a roll of the dice.

Thanks that helps heaps, and it's just given me more motivatation to just get out and try. I suppose if at first you fail, just try try again.
