Lilly pillies are flushing with new growth around Sydney at the moment. Out at Wirreanda Nursery yesterday I was shown two recent introductions they'd singled out as seedlings for their striking colours. The red over dark green of ‘Cherry Surprise' on the left is quite formal and in the territory of photinias. ‘Sunrise' is more riotous and tropical as it moves through pink, copper and yellow-green. As forms of Acmena smithii, they're both psyllid resistant. Compact growth and small, narrow leaves lend them to clipping as a screen or hedge.
